and of course PEPYS

The earlier games had more of an educational theme, in fact the very early games were nearly all only educational, but obviously the fun games were played with most and so fewer are around to-day

At the mid / end of the Victorian Era the games became prettier and more entertaining for children - Jaques had a series of wonderful games - very few of which (excluding Counties of England - again eductaional ) have survived in any number - They also produced some board games - usually themed but again interesting
The games that, started on linen at the end of the eighteenth century, progress as entertainment during the 1830s to 1850s and then migrated to board games as we know them to-day

In the late nineteenth century games were produce relating to cycling, racing and other sports - often with more adult themes.
In the twenties and thirties board games became popular and the some of games produced then are still popular to-day

De La Rue's cards were wonderfully drawn and with more child-like themes

Then there was Pepys who produced games from about 1938 until 1978 - the most popular games continued to be published by Gibson Games today

The hallmark of Pepys' games were the high quality of the pictures and artwork - after all only a small number of different children's games exist (I think there are seven "different"games") so most of the games are variations on a theme - it's the artwork and story made them different and they formed a world of their own.

Please browse and enjoy - remember your childhood - and the pleasure these games gave you
