These two sheets of cards are cards from J Lee’s Comic Lottery Amusement.
We have had the complete set (44)(as cards) in the original wrapper in the past. Pictures can be provided to the buyer of this item if requested. This is two sheets of cards (24 cards). There is some damage and repair hence pictures of the backs have also been shown.
John Lee was a wood engraver, working in Hatton Garden in the 1790s

Condition - Some damage as the pictures show, a tear that has been repaired on the back (looks more like a crease from the front) - wear at the corners of the "cards" (ie in the sheet) probably from where they were folded and a couple of small holes. The cards are colored and interesting - one states "Good luck, to this good company presents ten thousand pounds with J Lee's compliments" (long s used - so difficult to read initiallly). These sort of cards were often used at twetfth night parties

Picture Cards with rhyming riddle caption. These are listed in the British Museum with a date of c 1820. However as one of the cards is of a young Victoria the date would appear to be c1840.
One line of the riddle refers to the picture. The other line just rhymes with the first
ie In the summer rise at five - A place for bees is called a ....
There are 33 cards - they are numbered and the highest is 129. (Believed to be 144 as V&A has the answers to riddle cards that from the description sound to be like these) Although they all have the same patterned backs there is a variation in size and a couple look very foxed.

Riddle Cards - Condition / Cards good, a couple foxed / (33/144) / No rules or box

Play Card Grammar
This card game is very rare, we can find no reference to it. William Sallis made a small number of board games, and spelling games. He also made at least two card games - The Cottage of Contentment, which is similar in style to this game, but much more frivolous, and this game
Comic Play Grammar consists of 41 cards. The purpose of the game appears to be to teach children grammar.
The cards are numbered from 1 to 15 and different numbers of cards for each number are as follows
1x8(+QV), 2x6, 3x5, 4x3, 5x3, 6-10 all x2, 11-15 all x1. One of the 1 card is Queen Victoria which does not seem to fit with the others in the way of teaching grammar

Condition – This appears complete from the make-up of the cards and the fact that the box is full and could not accept another card. Cards are all very pretty and in very good condition (but slightly concave). The original box is good, some wear at the edge. There are no rules.
Postage / As postage often changes it will be provided at time of purchase. Postage will be at cost rounded up to the nearest £1.00 to cover packaging.
