An Interesting and Rare Riddle Game; there is no date and opinion varies as to when it was actually produced.
It is listed in Morgan Library and Museum and dated as c1830. The Bodleian dates it as c1800.
The Bodleian was tweeting pictures of their riddle cards, c18th November.

The word Hierogryphical is defined as relating to a form of writing using picture symbols, especially as used in ancient Egypt. This was popular in the early 1800s when the Rosetta Stone was brought to England. The picture on the lid features one lady showing two cards to another lady. Behind her two torches, held by an ape type creature, are burninng, odd symbolic items are on the ground by their feet.
The text for the riddles are, in many cases, well known English phrases ie

"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush",
"pride goes before the fall",
"make hay while the sun shines"

The box has "made in germany" printed on it. This appears to have been an overprint to the original print work as the font/size are slightly different.
Some games seem to have been popular for many years The (New) Game of Human Life (pub c1790 Wallis & E Newbery) was advertised in John Harrison 1809 catlogue (he was first refered to as success to E Newbery in1801) and was still being advertised in 1830 (ref John Harris's books for Youth 1801-1843), so presumably other game were sold for long periods.

Condition - Feronica Hierogryphical Riddles / Cards 24/24 plus one card on the inside box lid - hand colored cards, undamaged, but with odd light fox marks / Box - Good, there is an edge missing at the base of the box and a small paper loss to the top left corner. / No rules (or solutions to the riddles)

A very unusual card game in that all the pictures are etched engravings printed with bronze powder. The cards show, in great detail, the style of dress and sceptre that the monarchs hold.
The cards are arranged by century, a list of monarchs for each century and detailed picture of each monarch. We have had a set with the patterned backs in four different colors, as described in the British Museum. However this set has backs of all the same color
Jane Roberts wrote a quantity of poetry, some of which was published anonymously, and a number of unpublished poems and draft plots for novels survive in her notebooks. She was the inventor of The Royal Historical Game of Cards, mentioned in her journal and published by Robert Hardwicke in 1835 - ref A History of Playing Cards, Hargrave,

Condition - The Royal Historical Game of Cards / Cards - complete - very good just light use / Rules - lacking but some details from the BM included / Box - original - two part box - base has splits at the edges of the part of the box that slips into the top / front section of top is split on two edges
Postage / As postage often changes it will be provided at time of purchase. Postage will be at cost rounded up to the nearest £1.00 to cover packaging..

“To enable the happy possessor to form 13824 varieties of one to their own likeing. Seen here are eyes and mouths and noses, from which you will pay pick and choose, Each its peculiar charm disclose, which if you're wise you’ll refuse,
For if you miss the handsome faces, You're compensated by grimaces,"

(this is on the box lid but not readable as the lid is so rubbed so copied from another source)

There appears to have been two sets made by Merryman Makeface Esq, Comic Profiles (heads) and Funny Physiognomy (bodies) - copy in The Edinburgh Museum of Childhood and mentioned in the EPCS Magazine January 2002
Very strange faces appear not unexpect by the description.

Condition - Comic Profiles / Cards - 24/24 tops 23/24 noses 24/24 chins - all in good condition / Box - original - top very faded and difficult to read. / No rules - maybe the box lid was enough
