The earlier games had more of an educational theme, in fact the very early games were nearly all only educational, but obviously the prettier, more entertaining games were played with most and so fewer of these are around to-day. You can see a selection here and more of these games is also available on

Linen Backed Table Games

The games that started on linen at the end of the eighteenth century, progress as entertainment during the 1830s to 1850s and then migrated to board games as we know them to-day

In the late nineteenth century games were produce relating to cycling, racing and other sports - often with more adult themes.

We have a collections of Snakes and Ladders Games - showing the way the games changed from educational (good was reward - bad was punished) early boards to the later more entertaining games

In the twenties and thirties board games became popular and the some of games produced then are still popular to-day
Jaques Games were produced first produced in the 1840/50s and are still manufactured today. Their early board games are very sought after and very beautifully made.
De La Rue's cards were produced from the 1880s and wonderfully drawn with Children’s book characters such as Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland and Florence Upton’s Gollywog

Then there was Pepys who produced games from about 1938 until 1978 - the most popular games continued to be published by Gibson Games today
