A FULL SET OF THIRTY-SIX BOXED CHARLES I
SILVER
GAMING COUNTERS Full Length Sovereigns - Simon van der Passe
By Simon van de Passe, circa 1630, with the image of a monarch, length of reign, burial place and coat of arms, contained in a contemporary silver counter box also from the van der Passe workshop.
The cover pierced with a portrait of Charles I, the sides with mythical beasts and the base with Queen Henrietta Maria.
The counters commences with Edward the Confessor and end with Prince Charles [ later Charles II ].
The entire box is housed in a turned ivory box, diameter 2.6cm.
I GIVE NO OPINION ON THE CONDITION ON THE COUNTERS AS I FIND THE SUBJECT SO SUBJECTIVE - THE PICTURES SHOULD SHOW ALL THE DEFECTS AS THEY HAVE BEEN SCANED AT 600dpi BUT SINCE THESE ARE CAST THEY ARE FULL OF NATURAL IMPERFECTIONS EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SOME ATTEMPTS BY THE CRAFTSMEN TO TIDY UP THE COUNTERS.

GAMING COUNTERS Half Length Sovereigns - Simon van der Passe
By Simon van de Passe, circa 1635, die stamped with the half length image of a monarch and coat of arms, contained in a contemporary silver counter box also from the van der Passe workshop.
The cover with a portrait of Charles I, the sides decorated and the base with Father Time [?] - images show the condition fully including a 'bump' to the base.
The counters commences with Edward the Confessor and end with James, Duke of York.
[ There are six counters missing from the complete set - they are - Richard I, Edward I, Richard II, Henry IV, Edward IV and Charles I ]

c1818 Boxed Set of 24 [ complete ] Gilded Latten Gaming / Whist Counters by Thomason
Box is made of lattern with a lift off lid. Height 4.7cm Diameter 3.0cm
The box is decorated with two groups on circumferential Circles.
The lid shows four overlapping playing cards - the four aces with the duty ace [ Ace of Spades ] on top.
The lid is inscribed "MATHEWS ON THE GAME OF WHIST"
The box contains the complete set of 24 gilded latten counters each being 27mm in diameter.
The obverses' are all the same - half length figure of 'silence' looking to the right
with crossed laurel sprays below and inscribed "MATHEWS ON THE GAME OF WHIST"
The are 24 Unique reverse sides each bearing an inscription with a rule of whist apart from
one that reads "HOYLE / SO FAR FROM BEING / ABLE TO TEACH THE GAME / WAS NOT FIT TO SIT DOWN /WITH A THIRD RATE /
PLAYER OF THE / DAY / M. PAGE 47."
Quite a defamatory statement to make about the acknowledged doyen of the game
