Early 19th Century
Mother of Pearl Boxed Whist Markers
This item consists of a MOP box measuring 3.5 by 4.2 cms at widest points – It
has a sliding lid measuring 2.2 by 3.5. cms and inside are four MOP counters
measuring 2.1 by 2.8 cms. These four counters are hand painted and each feature
a King and a suit symbol. They are wafer thin – The condition is excellent – No
damage at all to the box – the markers are also excellent but there
is a little missing paint from the red suit symbol makers. |

19th century gold mounted ivory counter box + Counters
This drum shaped box with a screw lid contains sixteen
gold mounted ivory counters - this is complete.
Some
minor natural discoloration to ivory throughout, otherwise very
good condition.
This natural colour change is mentioned for completeness of description but it
does not distract from this exceptional early item.

SET OF GOLD/ENAMELLED WHIST MARKERS IN A GOLD BOX
This is a set of four
whist markers - continental style with Simple, Double, Triple and Quadruple
on the backs. Three have Court Cards on the face side: clubs, diamonds
and hearts. The fourth an ace represents Spades. This is a scenic ace,
the pieces are continental possibly German.
They measure 1.5 cms in diameter
and fit perfectly into gold box with Whist on the lid and a clip on one
side for attaching, possibly, to a watch chain. Gold box is very prettily
engraved. Condition is excellent on all pieces - no damage /scratches
etc - a truely wonderful piece. |

c1860s Bone Whist Box with four counters.
An attractive bone circular whist box. The lid is inscribed "WHIST" in
the midst of a decorative display of playing cards: the Court cards being
single courts. The screw cap opens to reveal the standard four whist markers.
Each is inscribed with concentric circles from one to four inclusive. This
box is in very good condition with no visible defects.

Your Temper fretted Mother of Pearl Counters c1830/40
Exceptional item - Eight oblong and Eight Round engraved and fretted mother
of pearl whist / gaming tokens.
Each inscribed "Keep Your Temper" with Chinese Village Scenes on
the reverse - Housed in a box with seated space for this complete set of counters.The
eight circular counter where used to score points and the eight oblong to mark
the games that had been won - a double set for short whist.
Box has a few scuff on the outside but this does distract from this truly exceptional
piece. |

Double Brass Whist Box and Counters
on mounted platform.
Each factory mounted whist box contains four counters - Obverse - Young
Head of Victoria dated 1849. Reverse "Keep your temper" with lady facing
right with cards on the table. The lift off
lids contain the Hoyle Scoring Method for bridge. Slight fading of brass
which is usual. A very scarce pair in very good condition.

NOUVEAU STYLE CONTINENTAL WHIST GAMING BOX
This item looks like a book
measuring 14 by 12 by 3 cms - It has enamelled playing cards with continental
style pips on the front - It opens to reveal in the lid 4 MOP whist markers
(one side having a suit symbol on it and the other 1 to 4 dots for scoring)
- and four more enamelled cards as decoration - there also appears to be
a space for a rule booklet but this is missing - Inside the base is space
for two packs of cards - being continental these cards are 8.5 by 5.5 cms
- The item is made of wood covered with possibly leather or similar material
- The item is in excellent condition - no damage to the enamelling or to
the box surface - the lock which look v ornate and has a decorative padlock
on it is made of white metal (there is a small mark on one edge but not
clear enough to read - we believe it is silver) This catch does not close
firmly -there appears to be e a small metal strip is missing - The interior
oval panel has a very slight stain at the base - otherwise it is excellent
- The cards in are period French cards but a two piquet decks not full
whist decks. |
