Offered as a mint sealed
double deck,
together with an explanatory leaflet,
all cased in a crested luxury lined box - an excellent item
The cards are especially
special this year as the
face-sides are facsimiles of a pack titled "Mediaeval Playing Cards"
This pack is one of the most attractive 19th century packs and is, by any
standard,
a remarkably beautiful pack.
The cards have been reproduced in the 'wide' format which was standard in those
days and are gilt edged.
Temple Bar is the only surviving gateway to the City of London.
First mentioned in 1293, it marked the boundary between the ‘liberties’ of
the
City of London and the City of Westminster.

as well as the deck bearing no indices. the association with Hardy is two fold.
He was the Master 1803 /1804 and Thomas Hardy was Nelson's Captain of the HMS

Hardy being with Lord Nelson when he died. - The cards have the traditional Ace
of Spades displaying the Master, r
The cards are gold edged and

Double Deck - as Issued
Complete and Mint Sealed in plush crested case.
In keeping with recent trends the 2005 Master of the Worshipful Company of
makers of Playing cards
John Card has chosen a non-standard court deck for his year in office.
He celebrates Dr Johnson and his dictionary through a carefully thought out back
design
showing Dr Johnson's house, his portrait as a oval insert, a few extracts from
his dictionary
and the crest of the Worshipful Company.
The deck is printed with an orange and red border and also an orange and blue
border.
This double deck is gilt edged and comes in a luxury cushioned box bearing the
gold crest of this Livery Company.
Housed in an outer protective box with label inscription "WCMPC Master's
Installation Set"
The deck includes two special jokers with Dr Johnson's quotations -
the best know being "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life;
for there is in London all that life can afford.
These cards were a very limited issue and were not on sale to the public.
The exciting court and pip cards are a reproduction of an extremely scarce
edition of a series of cards printed
in the 1890s by William Kimberley and are know as the "Royal National
Patriotic Cards".
The original of this pack are housed in this Livery Companies collection held at
the Guildhall.
These patriotic cards were produced in five different editions and this is the
reproduction of the
only know example of first edition. -
The court cards represent European Monarchy and World Heads of State
amongst others there are Queen Victoria, George and Martha Washington and
Wilhelm 1 of Germany.
The pip cards are amazing and an example of each value is pictured below.-
A reproduction of the back of the originals deck is also included [clock faces]
as an extra card.

In tune with the trend
established over the last three years the courts
and pip cards are non-standard replicating one of the great issues of the
early 19th Century - Hodges Astronomical Cards of 1828 where the cards
are beautifully coloured and represent the four seasons,
Greek Gods and astronomical features.
