1808 The KISS - rare early heart suit transformation playing cards.

Issued in a book, Leipzig 1808, the ten heart transformation therein contain some of my favorite cards.
Very original and using the heart symbol to combine two faces in an artistic way.
The Ace of Hearts provides the title for the book and is a truly lovely card.
All the transformation can be seen by clicking on the small pictures here.
In the 1850s there was a reproduction of this book which is also quite scarce - neither are mentioned in Field's standard work on the subject.

Book has some foxing which does not interfere with the plates. The spine of the book has some outer covering missing [ see pictures ] but the book is tight and is not coming apart.

Beatrice, or the Fracas Transformation Playing Cards 1818

Rudolf Ackerman published a popular monthly periodical titled "Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashion etc.,' in 1818 and 1819 he included plates of original transformation playing cards as this was a popular topic amongst the gentry.

Over the course of thirteen months, January 1818 to January 1819, he published four cards per month to bring the total to 52. Each plate bears the inscription "PICTORIAL CARDS"  below the cards and then the Number Issue of R Ackermann's Repository of Arts etc, and the published date.

At the right hand top corner of the plate is the plate no: and volume number.

The watermark of the paper is 1818 and the cards were also published in a portfolio with stiff front and back covers and no binding.

Similar packs of cards, differing slightly in design were published in Austria, France and America.

In the first four issues of the magazine there was a narrative which attempted to weave the cards into the story, not always successfully, unfortunately this did not continue for the other nine issues.

This is from the September 1818 issue and depicts 3D, 4S, 7C and the 5H. A cutting from the magazine, explaining the four cards, is attached to the back of the plate. That has been scanned and appears in the linked images.

Plate is in a very fine condition.

1828 "OLIVATTE CONSPIRACY" TRANSFORMATION PLAYING CARDS

The early 19th century Cotta German Transformations of 1805 to 1811 inspired, in 1828, a British Company, E. Olivatte, 6 Leigh St., Burton Crescent, to copy the designs from various packs and produce a pack of 52 Transformation Playing Cards plus a Extra Card - this was called "KALOPROSOPION", or "Beautiful Disguise" and is commonly referred to as the 'Olivette Conspiracy'.

They included eleven cards from Cotta 1805, twenty-five cards from Cotta 1806 and fifteen from Cotta 1807.

In their defence they did include one original design of their own, the Nine Of Hearts !!!

The Court Cards [ Face cards ] were given new names from Homer's Iliad and the Odyssey.
[ Historical details from Field's Book on Transformation Playing Cards ]

I believe this pack is a lot rarer than the original Cotta Transformation Playing Cards.
This pack contains 50/52 Transformation Playing Cards, lacks the 9 of Diamonds and the 10 of Clubs plus the extra card; it does contain the original 9 of Hearts.

The cards are engraved to a high standard with gilt edging and blue backs, they are in extremely fine condition. A part box is included which has the complete label which is a treat in itself, I presume the box had a small lift off top.

This is the First Edition of 1st January 1828

Insured Postage is free on this item.

c1840 Transformed Aces and Faces - being an Ace of Hearts in many vogues.

Published c1840 this book is titled "ACES AND FACES OR THE ODD TRICK IN HEARTS."

The OCLC WorldCat ( the central database listing the world’s libraries contents ) lists only one other copy known - their listing is as follows -
"London E Dangerfield ( 1900?-2000? ) - Caricatures and cartoons - Great Britain - English wit and humor - Pictorial. 28 leaves of hand coloured illustrations. The book being at the University of Victoria Libraries, Victoria, BC V8W 3AH Canada."

They obviously have the date incorrect, one by the style of the book and it’s characters and costume and two, Dangerfield was publishing maps in 1831 from the same address - 22 Bedford St, Covent Garden.

The item on offer lacks three sheets of characters - i.e. Having 25 intact sheets - would love to know the subject matter of the missing three!

Each leaf has been scanned so you can enjoy the humour and wit of these transformed Aces of Hearts.

The subjects are most diverse; from Streets sellers to a priest, a mother with two babies in her arms to a French Marshall.

The book measures 22cm by 17.5cm and is relatively good condition, some pages have been remounted into the book without damaging the contents and there is the very occassional, non-distracting, brown mark.

This pack has been reproduced from the original playing cards, in itself a very rare set, to a high quality. The pack is of 52 cards plus the modern addition of two jokers presented in a crush proof telescope box.

The four suits are cleverly incorporated into the individual scenes which includes cherubs making mischief with the Hearts, pixies playing with the diamonds, clowns doing tomfoolery with the Clubs and imps and dancers entertaining themselves with the spades.
