CSB3877 Picture c1910 Playing Cards - French Courts - probably made by Goodall - This deck of playing cards (52/52) are the same style as French cards produced in this period - The courts are the standard French style and are the same as those published about this time with "Goodall" and "London" on the court cards - The printing is in red, green, black and yellow- The faces are left uncoloured - There are indices, backs are plain patterned pink- the same a Known back made by Goodall - Aces are plain - Cards are excellent - no damage - v little use- Postage Category A 90 45
CSB3880 Picture c1867-1880 Willis Playing Cards - This deck is complete 52/52 - courts are printed in blue and stencilled - card is very cheap type and does not take the stencilling well - 5 cards are not perfect, it seems that at the time of manufacturing on three cards the picture part was not being stuck onto the card properly as they were badly cut and did not covering the backing card. Two face cards seems to have been rubbed too hard so pieces either peeled off or left a glue stain - otherwise deck is mint and not used.- Postage Category A 190 95

CSC3882 Picture 1911 De La Rue's Coronation Dubar Delhi Playing Cards - The backs have a picture of George V and Mary on them - with the inscription "Coronation Dubar Delhi 1911" The cards are complete 52/52 and in near mint condition. They are in their original box with "Navy Co-operative Society Limited" "Army & Navy" "London Bombay & Calcutta" on it. CSC3884 Picture 1905 The Trafalgar Centenary Playing Cards by Goodall - This deck of playing cards 52/53+J was issued to commemorate The Battle of Trafalgar. The backs show Horatio Viscount Nelson, Died Cot 21st 1805 - with a sculpture of him and a painting of the battle. Cards are in good condition - no damage but lightly used - gold edging still visible - They are in their original two part telescopic box - with the details in gold on white - There is some old repair to the box with tape but it is complete.- Postage Category A 200 100
CSC3897 Picture 1914 DD Prince Of Wales Patience Playing Cards - -This double deck of playing cards2*( (52/52) +J) is patience sized - not full sized Its has a non- named ace - used by De la Rue -The backs have Prince of Wales national relief Fund 1914 on them - One deck has pink background - the other blue - Cards are in v good no damage, creases etc - They are in an unmarked leather case which would appear original as the cards fit so well - It is slightly dirty and has the initials FAR on the front - there is some splitting to the box- Postage Category A 70 35

CSD3508 Picture C1744 Proof of Philip Blanchard Combined Label and Wrapper for Playing Cards – The legend was in use in 1745/6 – Christopher Blanchard joined over the business c1744 but seemed to producing a different class of playing card (The Great Mogul and Admiral Vernon) in his name while his father produced Henry the VI ?for? the Knave of Clubs in New Bond Street – The wrapper is mint- Postage Category B ASK
CSA3786 Picture c1750-60s Small Playing Cards – Early English Standard Design – The deck of playing cards (46/52) measure approx 19 by 26 cms – the court cards are engraved – red suits in red – and are of similar design of index cards of illustrated cards of this period. Missing are 2, 5, 6 of spades, 7 of diamonds, King of Hearts and Jack of Clubs – The cards are in good condition – but Queen and Jack of Hearts are creased – The Ace of Spades is plain – tax may have been avoid as these cards were “made for children” or made up privately – Who knows??- Postage Category A 300 150
CSA3811 Picture c1757 Henry Hart Outer Playing Card Wrapper.with Tax Penalties.
An outer wrapper for six packs of playing cards by Henry Hart c1757. These are for their branded "THE VALIANT HIGHLANDER" made at their Red Lion Street, Holborn, London premises.
The wrapper is 34cm by 30cm - the central graphic measuring 24cm by 9cm.
Either side of the portrait of the Valient Highlander is the clausing "FIFTY POUNDS PENALTY IF RELANDED" and "AND TWENTY POUNDS IF SOLD OR USED IN GREAT BRITAIN" showing this was a wrapper for exportation and not for domestic sales. Inscription below the Highlander reads "PRINCIPAL SUPERFINE LARGE CARDS MADE BY HENRY HART IN RED LION STREET HOLBORN LONDON." The initials HH top and bottom are decorated with suit signs.- Postage Category

CSA3561 Picture c1800 or possibly later Fake Gibson & Gisbourne Playing Cards - Wood Block Printed - crude wood block ace no 115 - name difficult to read - Produced presumably to avoid duty by issuing an ace in the style of 1765-1776 (no dyes for Aces Known for Gibson & Gisbourne until 1776) probably produced in Belgium c 1810-1820 - Single courts 52/52 - condition excellent- Postage Category A ASK 0
CSA3556 Picture c1800 Ludlow & Co Patent Knights Playing Cards - The ace has at centre "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit" ("No-one provokes me with impunity") - This is the motto of Order of the Thistle (also for the Royal Kingdom of Scotland) -The dates 1703 and 1800 appear on the ace. (Again this links to the order of the Thistle which after the initial establishment in 1687, fell into disuse during the reigns of William and Mary, but on 31 December 1703 was revived by Queen Anne) - This card is also found in a special deck issued by Wheeler c1780 - 1810 as the ace of clubs (All four aces were non-standard representing Orders - a duty ace was also provided) - There is a hand painted Spade pip at centre which is hand drawn over the original Club pip -The engraved design at base is lion wearing a crown, unicorn watches -There is a thistle at top - Again a Scottish link - The Single Court Cards are similar to Wheeler. - This ace is believed to be have been used as a forged ace to evade tax - Hargrave states tax evaded from 1700 -1800 probably assumed that from the dates on the ace -This deck would seem to have been used c1800 from the style of the courts - Complete 52/52 - v good but a little grubby- Postage Category A ASK 0
CSA3506 Picture c1805 Reproduction of c1769 Blanchard Deck of Playing Cards - Ace No 59 - This deck was believed to have been made in Belgium with the idea to avoid paying tax - which in 1805 was 1/6d on the cards (the tax of 1/- on the wrapper was constant from 1756 to 1828) - This deck was a copy of a Blanchard deck produced c1769 ( aces no 40-60 were registered Jul 1769 - Blanchard died Nov 1769)- Courts slightly different to Blanchard's original (King of Spades’ sword is a simple wavy line – The Jack of Club arrow has no head, The King of Hearts axe-haft is three diamonds and there is a spike behind his head - The ace of Spades has a small 5 and a larger 9 in italics, and is wood block not engraved, hence a forgery - All “forged” deck seem to have ace no 59. The condition is excellent – odd non-distracting dirty marks – no damage – natural paper stock crease of the card on the right hand side of the Ace of Spades which does not distract from the card - very little use- Postage Category A ASK 0

banana leaf. They are mounted and housed in two books and were previously part of a
collection by Captain H. E. Rimington Wilson of Broomhead Hall. His collection was sold in 1971 and although it only contained about 100 items of playing cards Sylvia Mann was totally impressed with the quality of the

An outer wrapper for six packs of playing cards by Hall & Bancks c18123. These are for their branded "THE GREAT MOGUL" made at their No: 15 Piccadilly, London premises.
The wrapper is 33cm by 31cm - the central graphic measuring 10cm by 27cm.The wrapper bears the inscription "CARD MAKERS TO HIS MAJESTY THEIR R.H THE PRINCESS DUKE & DUCHESS OF GLOUCESTER AND PRINCE LEOPOLD"
Nice crafted central graphic pain of a Great Mogul with a border with the four suit signs.- Postage Category

Graphics from larger wrappers cut out and pasted to scrap book page. One advertises "THE GREAT MOGUL" by Reynolds and Sons 29 & 30 Vere Street, Lincolns Inn Fields, London. The other is a graphic from an outer wrapper for Highlander Playing Cards most probably from the same manufacturer.- Postage Category

CSB1270 Picture 1861 Playing Card Queen Victoria Coat of Arms
This is a single playing card bearing the coat of arms - Of Victoria and Albert - It is a copy of a pattern made for her wedding in 1839 - It is double ended without indices - According to John Berry this deck was made for the Great Exhibition of 1861 - It was withdrawn at her request - The guildhall library has only two cards Queen and Jack of Diamonds - This card is Queen of Diamonds - (it seems as if these were sample cards and somehow were not withdrawn - (We do however have a complete deck which we believe is v unusul) - The card is mint- Postage Category A

MAD936 Picture c1870/80 DE LA RUE PLAYING CARDS - YE LANGHAM HOTEL - Backs with Hotel - Portland Place, London - Horse and Coaches - This deck of playing cards (52/52) - Are square cornered with no indices - The backs are early advertising for - "Ye Langham Hotel Portland Place London" on them - There is also a picture of the hotel - The details surrounding the hotel is lovely - Horse drawn coaches, Horsemen, dogs - And on the left hand side what appears to be a military procession - Again with horses and horsemen in uniform - The cards themselves are excellent / n mint - no damage - little sign of use - except one that has small mark on it (see scan)- Postage Category A 300 150

Cards are near mint – no sign of use at all - The 2C is a fraction larger than the rest of the pack and not quite as shiny Possibly from a cheaper style deck – probably done at time of manufacture

This double Bezique deck of playing cards 2*(32/32) Was made c 1910 /1914 The backs are blue with a darker blue pattern The cards are wide with indices The courts are the less fancy De La Rue courts The indices are large for this period and on all four corners The cards are in v good condition - no bends, creases etc Just v light use There are two card markers for scoring One a little scuffed where the pointer has rubbed on the card And rules for both Bezique and Polish Bezique are on card The box is pale blue with dark blue lettering With the suit symbols round the edges The box is in v good - just lightly scuffed at the edges- Postage Category C

Made in England by De La Rue - This deck of playing cards (52/52+J+sample card) - Depict the flags of The Allies - Belgium, Great Britain, France and Russia - In the foreground two dogs - An English Bulldog and a French Poodle - With the ?? German Flag in their teeth - The cards are wide measuring approx. 3.25 by 4.5 inches - The cards are in v good + condition - No damage (except a crease to the Joker - scanned) - And two v lightly creased corners (one scanned) - Bu lightly used. - The two part telescopic box has on it - ”The Allies Playing Cards” - ”Similar to those - Specially Manufactured for and Presented to - the Sick and Wounded of His Majesty’s Forces” - ”by Thos De La Rue & Co Ltd” - The box is missing a narrow side on the outer part - And a small part 1mm is missing from the inner box - Sample card etc. are all v good- Postage Category A

Made by Leonard Biermans Soc An Turnout - Belgium - This deck of playing cards (52/52+J) - Were produced as an advertising deck to show the different backs available - Hence the backs are three different colors - Green, blue and pink - Picture shows a vintage car tyres and flora decorating the borders - All printing is blue on the different backs - Cards are mint sill with original wrapper - They are v slightly concave - Box is good but the top flap and part of one short side are damaged- Postage Category A

Made in England c1920 – Manufacturer and tax wrapped - This deck of playing cards (52/52+J – assumed) - Are wrapped in the Goodall Gold Medal Packaging - And also have a tax wrapper over this - This deck comes in a two part telescopic box - That is dark maroon - The outer case having a coat of arms with the words - ”Confido Gold Berry” on it in gold - And a signature John Walker & Sons Ld - The sample card on the other side - The tax wrapper is slightly loose and can be partly removed - But it is attached to the wrapper which is still tied with cotton - Box is also mint- Postage Category A

Made by Waddingtons in England - This double deck of playing cards 2*(52/52) +1 J - Depict 1930s dressed men playing energetic golf shots - One deck is entitled “Clono-spasm” and features a bunker shot - The other is entitled “Paraphrasia Tarda” and features a putting shot - The cards have been used and so are a little dirty - Three have v light creases – (worst scanned) - The gold edging is just visible - The cards are in a two part box – with sample cards - And engraved as a gift from Oppenheimer Son & Co Ltd - The box is good – complete but split down one side- Postage Category B

CSC10 Picture GENERAL DE GAULLE CRESTED PLAYING CARDS - VERY LIMITED EDITION.
In the late sixties the then Prime Minister - Harold Wilson - had a summit meeting with the then President of France - General Charles de Gaulle. - - Harold Wilson dreamed up the idea of presenting the President with - four pack of playing cards in a presentation case to - mark the occasion. - - He commissioned Wadington to produce ten packs of cards - with the Presidents Initials against the background of the - French Flag; all against a background of Blue with Golden Fleurs de Lis - - Wilson kept two decks and it is not known what happened to the others. - - Undoubtedly other packs exist as is the way with scarce items and it - is likely that a few packs found themselves in the possession of an employee or two. - - This a complete mint sealed deck - scarce - it's was the property - of Waddington's Works Manager.- Postage Category A

I would estimate there are over 600 black and white illustrations enabling the collector to verify the manufacturer and date of his English Standard Cards.
