OGB29 Picture c1820 Roly-Poly English Roulette Game, Boule
Made in England also known as Roulet (England) Boule (France) - This item is a small Roly-Poly table
Measuring 4.25 inches by 8.75 inches – and 1.75 inches high Roly-Poly was an early gambling game not unlike roulette That was banned in England during the reign of George II (1727 –1760)
This board is made completely of walnut It is not unlike a roulette wheel with a circular spinable wheel and the numbers 1 – 24 around the sides, with a small indent associated with each
(there are also a second set of numbers – see below) The same numbers appear on the board, presumably where bets were placed It appears to be either a traveling board or a toy miniature of a full sizes table According to Joseph Strutt’s - ”The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England”
page 336 in the 1868 version - Book IV – Chapter II - Section - XXIV – Games Formerly Played with Cards It was prohibited by Act18 Geo II (George II – 1727 -1760) ”That no place shall be kept for playing at the said game of Roulet, or Roly Poly, or any other game with cards or dice”
This roly-poly table was owned by R C Bell, the collector and writer of many books on games
It can be seen in his book – “Games to Play” - page 69 R C Bell states that the second row of numbers are a later addition and may have been an adaptation for the French game of Boule.
The board is in excellent condition – no damage There is a little variation in the wood color at the top
However the wood is lovely and beautifully toned There is a small ball which acts like a roulette ball when the wheel is spun- Postage Category E+

GMS1204 Picture c 1830s BOXED GAME OF SCHIMMELL or THE BELL & HAMMER -possibly by BARFOOT
This is a very early version of this popular game which was invented in German c 1820s. This game is complete and consists of five large hand colored cards approx 4 by 5 inches : The Bell, The Hammer, Bell & Hammer, White Horse and The Inn. - The cards are hand colored - (three have roses in the borders - which makes us believe this could be made by Barfoot) - The cards are thick cardboard with a black backing - There are also eight wooden dices - not referred to as die but numbered squares - There is a wood (probably box wood) shaker, a hammer and a number of small pieces of square varnished card - presumably used as chips - (there are three different pattern cards - one being v similar to the backing for N Carpenter's boxes c 1840 - this firm also produced a Bell & Hammer game - c1832 - the rules are almost identical to Carpenter' but without his name at the bottom) - Barfoots jigsaws were often backed with a bright green paper similar to N Carpenter which also points towards collaboration between these to makers - Rules are split in half but complete - The whitewood box is v good - scuffed but undamaged - The label shows a white horse, bell and hammer - (there is the name of a previous owner ? E Jones on the label across the white horse)- Postage Category
