TRO3809 Picture 1803 Nixon-Fores Transformation Playing Cards.
Designed by the caricaturist John Nixon and published by Fores this is the first English offering of Transformation Playing Cards. The trend had started in Germany in 1801 [ maybe not - there is some evidence that this was a social pastime which laterly was turned into a commercial venture ] and was to become extremely popular. These cards were printed in five sheets and sold as such, uncoloured, to avoid the heavy duty on playing cards. Fores would have had a local artisan available to cut the cards and colour them for any purchaser. This offering consists of 23 cards from the first two published sheets. They have been crudely cut from the sheets and mounted on board not card stock never-the-less they are a rare issue and represent the start of a series of packs employing the skills and talents of John Nixon.- Postage Category

The cards have plain backs and some exhibit signs of previous mounting [ on the plain backs ] - the cards are rated near very fine having been played with but with no damage, tears, bends etc.- Postage Category

CSA3810 Picture They were believed to have been made in Ceylon and are on either palm leaf or
banana leaf. They are mounted and housed in two books and were previously part of a
collection by Captain H. E. Rimington Wilson of Broomhead Hall. His collection was sold in 1971 and although it only contained about 100 items of playing cards Sylvia Mann was totally impressed with the quality of the
collection.- Postage Category

TRO3801 Picture Manuscript Transformation Playing Cardsbc1890 Professionally Designed.
A near complete set [ Lacking AS, Jack Hearts and 9 Spades - only the 9S is pertinent as Duty Ace and Court Cards are not traditionally transformed ] of hand-drawn transformation playing cards.
The cards were produced by De la Rue c1870 with a patterend back and no indicies.
The transformations are of a high quality and were most probably done by a professional artist. A similar deck of cards is featured in Albert Field's book on page 204 and he attributes those designs to George Cruickshank which is highly debatable.
Thses are not by Cruikshank as the Ace of Clubs features a popular Victorian song "Romany Lass" which was not written untill four years after Cruikshanks death.
Most of the designs are original in concept and I do think that this particular set predated those refered to by Field.
In the scans all pip cards are shown the eleven court cards are not as they are not transformed.
The ingenuity of the pictures is quite staggering especially when one views cards like the 8H [ a shoal of fish amongst a fisherman's line ] and the 10D [ a row of tankards ]. the faces on the characters featured on the 5D, 7D and 6D are a real treat.
Cards lightly discoloured but generally in very good condition.- Postage Category

TRO3470 Picture c1890 Pen and Ink Hand Drawn Transformation Playing Cards.
A high standard of originality of design and content is evident on these cards. A decent attempt at enlivening the court cards though one may be a little politically incorrect these days.
I feel sorry for the Ace of Hearts, which I secretly love, for it has been turned into a Xmas pudding.
A enjoyable set of cards in good condition. cards manufactured by De La Rue with atterened backs- Postage Category
