MWP3220 Picture c1888 VICTORIAN GAME OF PARLIAMENT - POLITICIANS - Made in England by Henry Reason - - This game is complete 46/46 cards - 23 cards depict Liberals - 23 Conservatives - All cards have caricature drawings of a politician - With a similar name - ie Rt Hon WE Grindstone is WE Gladstone - Rt Orchid Chain-Em-In is Joseph Chamberlain - Baron de Caterpillar is Baron de Worms - first Jewish Privy Councillor - Lord Salisbury-Plain is Marquis of Salisbury - Prime Minister - - This version is thought to be a second version of the game as the conservative no 9 card is Rt Hon H Mouthuse QC - Not Lord Diddlesleigh who died in 1887 and is in earlier (and we believe more common) versions of this game. - (one copy of the game with this card is known in the British Museum) - - - The cards are in v good+ condition - no damage, some light use/v light foxing - There is one original programme (relates to the voting arrangement) - and one photocopied programme - The rules are a photocopy - There is no box- Postage Category A 0
GPO3189 Picture c1780s CONVERSATION CARDS - A set of 23 cards - similar to in style the set known as "Law & Security" or "Tragedy & Comedy " (made c1775) - but all cards in this set have two options - ie Cottage or Content, Youth or Innocence - otherwise art work looks similar - Possibly designed by S Hooper or his apprentice but not identified in any way - cards are engraved and in excellent condition - v entertaining and detailed.- Postage Category A 0
GPO977 Picture c1820 ASTRONOMICAL CARD GAME - COMPLETE & BOXED - This game was produced by T Ward & Co - Paternoster Row, London - It is a question and answer game - Concerned with the planets and probably aimed at education rather than pleasure - The Planets known at the time (Q19) are - "Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Georgium Sidus; - to which may be added, the newly discovered planets, Vesta, Juno, Ceres and Pallas" - Georgium Sidus is Uranus named after George III by its discover Sir William Herschel who discovered it I 1781. - Vesta was discovered in 1807,Juno in 1804, Pallas in 1802 and Ceres on 1/01/1801 - as these were described as newly discovered the date seemed within ten years ie c 1820- but certainly prior to 1846 when Neptune was discovered. - The game consists of 52 questions on four cards and 52 answer cards - The cards are large measuring 3 by 4.5 inches - The box has a diagram of the seasons on the back - Astronomical cards on the sides - A picture of the solar system attached to a table on the front - With the following narrative - "Compiled from the best Authorities; principally from Keith's invaluable Treatise on the Globes; and particularly adapted to interest and assist the youthful student in the sublime science of Astronomy" - The cards are excellent - no tears, creases or bends - clean - The box is possibly missing the top - (although it is likely that this box just had a card wrapping inside to protect the edge) - One side of the box has split - there is a small tear on the front - But otherwise complete.- Postage Category A 250

This complete 40 card games pack was issued as educational playing cards by Charles Hodges of 27 Portman Square, Portman Square, London in 1827/1828 These are the originals not the later set made by Rock Brothers The cards represent the four seasons, the twelve zodiac cards and 24 other constellations The cards are gold edged and in mint condition Steel engraved and uncolored They are complete with the booklet ”Brief Explanation of the Constellations” published by W Davy Gilbert Street The cards are in their original box LARGE SCANS BUT HOPEFULLY YOU WILL FIND THESE LOVELY TO LOOK AT EVEN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BUY- Postage Category A

GPO1076 Picture c1840 GAMES OF QUARTETTES No1 - HISTORICAL CHARACTERS - This is one of a number of educational children's card games produced in the 1830/1850 period - All are quartette games which involve collecting the four related cards - in this case the group is the king (or queen) and three notable people of the period - Plain white cards with one name at the centre and the other three members of the group bottom left hand corner - Rules seem to have been written generally to cover all quartette games - This series of games were published in London (Houlston&Wright), Liverpool(Greenwood), Edinburgh(Oliver and Boyd) and Dublin (Robertson) - The game appears complete - ie (complete sets and the box is full) All monarchs from Henry VI to Victoria - The cards are excellent as is the box and rules.- Postage Category A 18

GPO3230 Picture c1840 JOHN BETTS - PROFITABLE PASTIMES IN SCRIPTURE HISTORY- NEW TESTAMENT - This Pastime is complete in Wooden Box - It consists of 54/54 cards with phrases + blanks - The players (child) has to fill in blanks and if successful takes a counter otherwise gives uo a counter - The original rules have the correct answers and also lots of advertisements for maps and other games) - There are red and white bone counters in the box which may not be original - The cards and rules book are excellent - no damage or tears - The original box is also excellent undamaged and with a color picture of the cruxification on the lid- Postage Category C 200
GPO978 Picture 1844 CLASSICAL GREEK CARD GAME - Made in England - printed by White - Printer and Bookseller High Street Bedford - This item is an educational style game - Aimed to entertain and teach young people Classical History - It is complete and consists of thirty cards - And two page answer sheet, which gives the solution and some history of the person - Each card has the name of a Greek personage hidden - eg card 2 shows The first part of a ship, a knight's title and a fruit - Giving Prow, sir, pine - Giving Proserpine - daughter of Jupiter and Ceres - - The cards are all hand engraved - very detailed art work and v beautifully done - The cards are in excellent condition - no damage, creases etc - One card - no 30 - has a discoloration in a semicircle at the top - This is where one card would have not been protected by the box - As the box is a slip case with a semi circle indentation to ease out the cards - The box is also hand engraved - with the words - " Eniomaucal (sic)Symbols from Classical History 1844" - With another lovely pen drawing of a classical Greek scene - The answer sheet has split along the fold.- Postage Category A 400
GPO3190 Picture c1855 THE QUEEN - published by Evans& Sons 114,115 & 116 Newgate Street, London - Printed by Kronheim & Co - This game is complete 33/33 - and consists of four suits a form of rummy/poker with royalist overtones - the rules have "Vivat Regina" at the base - The suits are Crests (Arms of Archbishop of Canterbury), Crowns ( Queen Victoria's Coat of Arms), Stars (Order of the Garter) and Feathers (Arms of Prince of Wales) - The cards are colorlithe printed and in excellent condition - no damage - just v light use- Postage Category A 175

Probably a child's educational game - - This item consists of 13 cards that measure 6 by11 cms - The cards all have a Greek style frame with a picture of a god at the centre - The name of the god appears three times in - English, French and German - often all 3 are the same word - The cards appear to have been black & white litho printed - (The frame also appears to be litho printed in green and black) - And then hand painted /stencilled - The cards have been used so have odd marks or foxing on them - But there is no damage and the overall condition is v good +- Postage Category A

This item consists of 54 cards - Depicting different animals playing / taking part in 9 different activities - All of which you would expect to have seen in a Circus at that time - The number of cards of each type vary between 2 and 9 - There are no rules so we do not know if it is complete - 9 sets of 9 cards does seem a large number - The cards are - Mr Feebie - Frog weightlifting, Mr Globe Trotter Elephant travelling - Mr HeadBall ? footballer, Mr Tail-a Whip - Monkey from Circus - Mr Rooster - Chicken dressed as clown, A Master Singer - Cat Singing - Tench Me Not - Lion as a Master of Ceremonies (?Ring Leader) - Mr Boxwell - ? Boxing and Mr Valentine - Donkey dressed for circus - The cards are old - printed green on sepia - They are in mixed condition all having some dark aging at he edges - About 4 are v dark (worst scanned) - A few have cracks at the edges - all damage is aging not from use - There is no box or rules- Postage Category A

The ranks are 9 levels of the nobility and higher ranks can take lower ranks - Complete with rules and hints to players, score sheets in original box. This is a children's card game from, we think, 1920s Depicting characters from the children's comic
TOBY It consists of 12 sets of 4 cards "at Dawn", "at noon" "in the Afternoon"" and "in the Evening"
The characters include The Blackamoor a black gentleman Mr Punch - from Punch and Judy Judy - from Punch and Judy Henrietta - a hen Toby - the dog and star of the game And various other characters from the comic The cards are undamaged - but a little dirty with use (one is slightly stained - see scan) The art work is lovely and the colors are vibrate. The two part box is fair Missing one small side from the top And three small sides from the base The picture on the front and The ad for the magazine Toby on the base There are no rules - but the game is "Happy Families" collecting style The game is published by G Heath Robinson & J Birch Ltd 17-18 Tooks - Cursitor St, London EC4- Postage Category A
